10/15/2011: New International Master Program "Molecular Sciences and Simulation" (iMOS)



The new international MSc Program iMOS was started in the winter term 2011/12. iMOS is financially supporated by the rectorate program "Master 2.0".

11/09/2011: ZEMOS will be realized


The new research building ZEMOS at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) was approved by the Joint Science Conference of Germany (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz - GWK): About 44 M Euro will be assigned to the investigation of solvation processes (Solvation Science) at RUB.

08/08/2011: New Speaker of the RD IFSC

On Aug. 8th 2011 Prof. Dr. Havenith-Newen resigned from the speaker position. Als new speaker the general assembly elected Prof. Dr. Mudring.

The RD IFSC appreciates the commitment of Prof. Havenith-Newen and is looking forward to the term of Prof. Mudring.


08/08/2011: General Assembly

The general assembly of RD IFSC met on Aug. 8th 2011.

As new members of the RD IFSC the following scientists were elected: Prof. Dr. K. Morgenstern, Prof. Dr. M. Wark, JP Dr. R. Beránek, JP Dr. S. Ebbinghaus, Dr. Ch. Müller, Dr. N. Plumeré , Dr. F. La Mantia, Dr. A. Bandarenka, Dr. S. Kareth, and Dr. J. Strunk.


07/11/2011: New Research Building (ZEMOS) at RUB

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum move a big step ahead on the way to the top leaders in a fast developing research field - the investigation of solvation processes in chemistry, biology and engineering. The German Science Council (Wissenschaftsrat, WR) approved a 44 M€ research building on RUB campus. The "Center for Molecular Spectroscopy and Simulation of Solvent Controlled Processes (ZEMOS) will host about 100 researchers and an excellent infrastructure.

06/27/2011: Successful productivity of the RD IFSC (2009-2011)

The research quality and productivity of the RD IFSC is documented by 302 publications in peer-reviewed journals and 35.5 M€ of acquired third-party funding (+ 0.7 Mio € industrial funds) since 2009.


05/12/2011: Water and biological molecules probed by THz spectroscopy

To investigate water at the interface and its interactions with biomolecules, Martina Havenith-Newen, with colleagues Martin Gruebele and David Leitner, applied to HFSP to fund a project to use the new method of Terahertz spectroscopy. This Germany-USA collaboration was considered very high-risk but proved a success and has resulted in exciting findings about the nature of water surrounding proteins.

Draft Proposal for Cluster of Excellence RESOLV positively evaluated



The draft proposal RESOLV born by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (coordinator: Prof. Martina Havenith-Newen) for becoming a cluster of excellence "RESOLV - Ruhr Explores Solvation: Understanding and Design of Solvent Controlled Processes" was positively evaluated (Press release in German language)!
