IFSC-Practical course

Information about the internship Interfacial Systems Chemistry (IFSC)

The “Interfacial Systems Chemistry” (IFSC) practical is a compulsory internship for the master students in the first term of their M.Sc. study course in Chemistry. Within the framework of this course, the students are expected to get an overview of the research activities (interdisciplinary) in the Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Research Department IFSC. One of the central scientific areas is the investigation of chemistry on interfaces from molecules to complex systems. Therefore, the internship bears the name of the Research Department Interfacial Systems Chemistry (RD IFSC) established in 2008, but it is nevertheless not restricted to research topics within RD IFSC.

The leading idea of the IFSC practical is to offer the new M.Sc. students a particularly attractive kick-off experience towards research related training within the focal point programs of the M.Sc. course portfolio of the Graduate School of Chemistry and Biochemistry (GSCB). The concept is a guided lab rotation involving a selection (assignment) of two short term lab projects (two weeks per project) at two distinctly different research groups of the Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry and possibly even beyond, taking advantage of the interdisciplinary research cooperations with the other Research Departments on the RUB Campus (http://www.rd.ruhr-uni-bochum.de). The key learning objective is to familiarize the students with the scope of research areas, topics, directions, challenges and experimental instrumentation, surroundings, methods and conceptual and theoretical backgrounds. In addition, the students will have an opportunity to improve their skills in scientific presentation. This will be enabled by organizing a Student Poster Symposium (SPS) where the students are expected to make a scientific presentation in the form of a poster on the practical work they have carried out during the IFSC internship.

Information on the practical course

The IFSC practical course started in the first week of the winter term 2011/2012, and will end with a poster presentation in the framework of a Student Poster Symposium (SPS) which will be held on December 16th, 2011.

You find more details on the practical course and assessment on the Blackboard system of RUB.

An information session to this IFSC practical course was be held on June 30th 2011 at 8.00 hrs in HNC 30. Registration via Blackboard was open for the IFSC Practicals (WS 2011/2012) from September 15th to 28th 2011.
