The Materials Research Department (MRD) has the intention to achieve pathbreaking research results in the sector of integrity of small scale systems as well as in the domain of high-temperature materials. In coorporation with scientists of the departments of Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Geo-Sciences as well as other research institutions resident on the campus of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum- the Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS) and the Central Institute for Ion Beams and Radionuclides (RUBION)- interdisciplinary research on base of material sciences should break new ground. The network between the Ruhr- Universität Bochum and the surrounding extramural research institutions – Max-Planck- Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE), MPI für Kohlenforschung (MPIKOFO) plus the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR)- at the same time establishes new perspectives in coorporative research.
The MRD incorporates the following research alliances in addition to many individual projects:
SFB-TR 103 - From atom to turbine blade – scientific foundations for a new
generation of monocrystalline superalloys
SFB-TR 87 - Pulsed high power plasmas for the synthesis of nanostructured functional layers
      SFB 558 - Heterogene Katalyse
SFB 526 - Rheology of the Earth
      SFB 491 - Magnetische Heterostrukturen
SFB 459 - Shape Memory Technology
